Gene Brewer, Class of '69

Kinda kept to myself at Baker, never really joining in any activities beyond ROTC. Managed to enjoy the sock-hops and a few notorious parties, whose details should not be mentioned here. We resided off-post in the Joy Rd/Benning Hills area and most of the friends I had came from that area. Being a military brat, having no funding for college, I ended up joining Uncle Sam's Army shortly after Graduation. I served 2 tours of duty in Nam with the 11th Armored Cav and the 1st Signal Brigade as an Avionics Mechanic. After two tours of duty, I had no interest in a military career and opted out for an early discharge when I was sent home with injuries in 1972. I left the army with the rank of E-5, a Bronze Star, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross, and no good conduct medal due to an altercation with a Lieutenant. Upon discharge from the Army in 1972, I relocated to Orlando, Florida. I enrolled in Valencia Community College eventually getting degrees in Fire Science and General Education. I met my wife (Landa) at Valencia Community College, we married in 1974. We have one son (Sam). Sam is named after Sam Camp (Class of 69) my best friend @ Baker High. I became a member of the Orange County Fire Rescue Department (Orlando, Florida) in 1976 and remained there until I retired at the end of 2002. I served as a firefighter, emergency medical technician, company officer, arson investigator, fire inspector, fire protection systems specialist, and fire plans examiner during that career. After a very brief period of retirement, I decided that I would return to work. I now serve the citizens of Lake County Florida as a fire inspector, fire protection systems specialist, and fire plans examiner working in the Tavares, Florida office of the Lake County Building Department.
