David M. Bacchus, Class of '71

I have so many fun memories of my time at Baker High School, especially about great friends and about playing in the Marching and Concert Bands! All of us spent a lot of time practicing. I loved the time together. Believe it or not I still play my trombone with a small swing band. After I graduated from High School I attended the University of Georgia where I discovered that I liked Geology. I frequented the university library magazine rack and would read the Oil and Gas Journal, which encouraged my interested in the Oil Industry. I spent one spring and summer working on oil rigs as a rough neck, motorman and derrickman. After graduation I spent many years (weekends and holidays) traveling to wellsites to evaluate wells throughout Texas and Lousiana. Eventually I started receiving work from overseas. Needless to say, I've been sick in a number of places including Pakistan and Vietnam; the Geology career has been an adventure. I am now living and working in the Middle East as a Geologist. I rent a home with my artistic wife and son (born 1992) in a large compound with lots of palm trees and flowers; the swimming pools have airconditioned water during the summer months and are heated in the winter; my son attended the American school near our home and now goes to the American High School located at the US Consulate. For many years I was very active with my son in Boy Scouts and Flag Football. We went camping in the desert a number of times and visited an area where red sand dunes are over 400' high, also we have been to the forests of Germany for three summer camps, a snow lodge in Kandersteg Switzerland and have spent a memorable time with the U.S. Navy and Marines on the island of Bahrain. My son will be an Eagle Scout this spring 2008, at last. He is very musical and plays the bagpipes at ceremonies as well as gives lessons. My family gets to travel several times a year which my wife enjoys; our favorite places to return to are Italy and Great Britian. We have also been to Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Singapore, Malaysia and UAE but at least one trip a year includes Houston, Texas. I no longer have family in Columbus, Georgia but I love to visit in order to see how things have changed. My four brothers, who also graduated from Baker High School, are living in different cities. Ralph "Buddy" is in Mobile Alabama, Robert is in Vacaville California, Joe is in Chico California and Jon is in Lawaranceville Georgia. Our wonderful mother, Martha, passed away in 1993. Update, December 04. I went to the Baker Reunion 2004 and saw several dear friends! Just not enough time to visit. Update, January 08. I hope you all are doing well... and that the years have been good to you and your families.
