CLEMSON UNIVERSITY NAMES NEW POLICE CHIEF

CLEMSON -- Clemson University has named Gregory C. Harris, chief of police at Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga., as its new police chief. He was selected from a field of more than 70 applicants.

Harris, 39, has been at Columbus State since 2000. He has also worked as assistant director of the police department at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga., as interim chief of police at Clark Atlanta University and for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, where he handled special investigations of narcotic activities throughout the state.

"He brings a wealth of experience to Clemson," said Mary Poore, associate vice president for municipal services at Clemson University. "He has an excellent relationship with students, faculty and staff at Columbus State and a very diverse background in law enforcement ---- everything from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to working in a university environment."

He will be responsible for directing all activities of the Clemson University Law Enforcement and Safety Division, including uniform patrol investigations, education and outreach programs, victim assistance and parking enforcement. He will also be responsible for directing security at all major events, such as sporting events and concerts.

Harris, a native of Columbus, served in the U.S. Army from 1985 to 1988. He earned his bachelor's degree in criminology from Saint Leo College in Fort McPherson, Ga., in 1994 and his master's degree in public administration from Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga., in 1998. Harris is a member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Georgia Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. He is also the region 3 vice president and executive board member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.
